Presence Sensor vs Motion Sensor: What Actually Changes in Your Home
Presence sensor vs motion sensor explained: why PIR stops working when you sit still, what mmWave radar adds, and the Thread limits buyers are not told.
Answer up front — Aqara now positions itself as a spatial intelligence company, not just a maker of smart devices: it is about sensing what is happening in a physical space, deciding what should happen, and controlling it. "Aqara Space" is not a product name. It gets used three different ways — the category idea, a physical experience-store format, and a partner programme — and only some of those apply to Malaysian buyers. Synchroweb Technology (M) Sdn Bhd is the official Aqara distributor in Malaysia and the exclusive distributor for Aqara spatial intelligence and commercial solutions here.
For most of the last decade, smart home marketing has been a list of devices. Four sensors, a hub, two relays, a curtain motor. That list is still how a lot of systems are sold in Malaysia, and it is not wrong — but it describes the parts, not the outcome. Aqara has been repositioning itself away from that model, and the shift is worth understanding before you spend anything, because it changes what you are actually buying and who is responsible for making it work.
This is where most confusion starts. The phrase circulates in three distinct senses, and they are easy to mix up. None of the three is a product you can put in a box and install.
| Reading | What it actually is | Where you will meet it |
|---|---|---|
| Aqara spatial intelligence | Aqara's category position: perception, decision and execution across a physical space, sold as a delivered outcome rather than a box | Aqara's own industry material, and how Synchroweb describes its Malaysian business |
| Aqara Space experience store | Physical showrooms rebuilt as homes — real living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms — instead of product shelves | A flagship in Taichung, Taiwan and a hall in Foshan, China. Neither is in Malaysia |
| Aqara Space Global Partner | A partner track Aqara runs alongside its standard Authorized Reseller and Retailer Programme | aqara.com. Malaysian partners are supplied and supported through Synchroweb |
If you read a social post saying "Aqara Space is coming to your city", check which of the three it means before you assume a showroom is opening near you.
The clearest statement comes from Aqara's China industry site, which describes the Aqara Space offering as providing professional spatial-intelligence solutions for commercial spaces, combining hardware, software, AI and services, with the stated aim of building efficient, low-carbon, digital and sustainable living and working spaces.
Two words in that sentence carry the whole shift. The first is solutions — plural, spanning hardware through to service, not a device list. The second is low-carbon, which is an energy claim, not a convenience claim. Aqara is now describing its own work in the language of building operations, which is a different conversation from the language of gadgets.
This is the practical part. A device-controlled home and a spatially-intelligent home are built and bought differently.
| Old device-control thinking | Spatial intelligence thinking | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of design | One device and the one thing it does | One space and what genuinely needs to happen in it |
| Trigger | A timer, a button pressed, or an app | What the space is actually doing at that moment |
| Role of a sensor | Switch something off | Establish what is true in the space right now |
| Where the logic runs | Largely in the app, reached over the internet | On a hub or edge device located on your own site |
| What a room is | A set of lights you can command | A zone with rules, priorities and history |
| Failure you notice | A light did not come on | The space quietly stopped behaving correctly |
| What you are buying | A box | A designed outcome someone is accountable for |
Read the last row again. In the left column, a failed switch is a returns problem. In the right column, a room that switches the aircon on for an empty hour because nobody could tell the room was empty is an operating-cost problem that nobody notices until the bill arrives.
The new sensing layer is what makes that distinction possible. Aqara's Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400, announced at CES 2026 and released on 16 September 2026, is the clearest public example: 60 GHz mmWave radar that tracks up to ten people at once, covers a room divided into up to eight zones, and distinguishes standing, sitting and lying without using a camera. Availability in Malaysia — confirm with us. Do not assume it is on the shelf at a local store.
Aqara has opened physical "Aqara Space" experience centres. Two are confirmed:
| Store | Where | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Taichung flagship | Taichung, Taiwan | Opened around 15 December 2025. Appointment-based visits, 10:00–20:00, closed Mondays |
| Foshan | Foshan, China | A professional exhibition hall inside a home-furnishing mall |
Neither store is in Malaysia. We state that plainly because store photos from Taichung and Foshan circulate online and get presented as though a local equivalent already exists. It does not.
The design philosophy is the interesting part. Aqara rejected the conventional electronics-shopping-mall shelf display and rebuilt the store as a home — genuine living room, bedroom and bathroom layouts, plus a smart office and smart meeting room. Both run the same one-stop service chain: pre-consultation, whole-home design, professional in-home installation, and after-sales warranty.
Read that chain again. It contains no mention of a box. Every stage is labour. Aqara built stores that look like apartments because the stated problem was that consumers cannot see or touch a smart home before buying it — you cannot judge whether an automation is useful by reading a spec sheet. That is a statement about service design, not hardware.
Synchroweb Technology (M) Sdn Bhd is the official Aqara distributor in Malaysia and the exclusive distributor for Aqara spatial intelligence and business and commercial projects in Malaysia. Business, project and commercial deployments are supplied and supported through Synchroweb and its certified partners.
That is the honest position, and it is different from a store. There is no Aqara Space showroom in Malaysia to walk into. What exists is a distributor and a partner network able to supply and support spatial-intelligence deployments here.
Aqara also runs a real "Become an Aqara Space Global Partner" track alongside its Authorized Reseller and Retailer Programme, which requires a maintained website, a dedicated Aqara product page, a physical business address, application to Aqara's overseas team, a five-working-day review, and compliance with local Aqara MSRP. Malaysian partners are covered through us rather than applying overseas.
Three practical consequences for a homeowner reading this in Malaysia.
First, the buying unit changes. Instead of "which sensor do I need for the hallway", the question becomes "what should happen in this room when nobody is in it". That reframing is what separates a system that reduces bills from a system that adds gadgets.
Second, the logic needs to live on your site. Writing on the Malaysian smart home market, The Edge Malaysia notes internet dependency as a barrier: without a connection, users have limited or no access to their appliances. A space that cannot turn a light off when the fibre drops is not a smart space. This is covered in more detail in our guide to choosing between Zigbee, Wi-Fi and Matter.
Third, someone has to own the outcome. That is the part the device list never covered, and it is why the service chain in those two stores matters more than the store design.
