Aqara Curtain Driver E1 vs C3 vs SEA: Which Motor for Your Window?

A slim white unbranded motor unit clamped to a ceiling-mounted curtain track above a living room window in a Malaysian terrace, with the track running back toward a ceiling that sits noticeably higher than in a European house, showing the space a curtain motor needs above the window

Answer up front — The Curtain Driver E1 is the only Aqara curtain motor we can give you a documented specification for, and Aqara publishes it in two clearly distinguished variants: Track and Rod. The Curtain Controller C3 and the Curtain Controller SEA both have product pages on Aqara's own site that are empty — a heading, no specification whatsoever, and a meta description containing raw CSS. We are not going to invent a number to fill that gap, and we would think carefully before buying a product whose manufacturer has published nothing you can check.

Most curtain motor comparisons will give you a table with four products and eight numbers per row. We cannot, because two of the four products in this range have no numbers published anywhere by Aqara. That gap cannot be filled honestly, and pretending otherwise is what makes a comparison article worthless to someone standing in their own living room with a tape measure.

So this article does two things: it gives you the documented E1 Track versus E1 Rod comparison, properly; and it tells you what it means to be looking at a product with an empty product page.

Every figure in this table comes from Aqara's own product pages. The two right-hand columns are empty because Aqara's pages are empty — not because we were not looking.

First, a naming correction worth making

If you have been searching for an "Aqara Curtain Motor C3" or an "Aqara Curtain Track Motor SEA", the products you are looking at have different official names.

  • "Curtain Motor C3" is actually the Curtain Controller C3.
  • "Curtain Track Motor SEA" is actually the Curtain Controller SEA.

This matters beyond pedantry. If you order by searching the wrong name, you can end up comparing a track motor against a controller — two different kinds of device that do different jobs in a window. And on the SEA page, the heading renders as just "Curtain Controller", with "-SEA" appearing only in the URL and the page title, so a casual visitor can genuinely miss which variant they are looking at.

The Curtain Controller C3 and SEA: what an empty product page actually means

Here is exactly what is published, so you can judge it yourself.

Aqara publishes no specification for either product. Not a thin one. None. Specifically:

  • The Curtain Controller C3 page renders a heading and nothing else. No specification table, no dimensions, no torque, no protocol, no power figures.
  • The Curtain Controller SEA page is the same — an empty stub with no specification at all.
  • On both pages, the meta description returned by the server contains raw CSS instead of a description.

That last detail is the tell. A product page that is simply thin is a marketing decision. A product page whose meta description is raw CSS is a page that was never finished.

We are not going to fill that gap. You will not find a torque figure for the C3 in this article, because inventing one would be worse than useless to you — it would be a number we made up about a load-bearing device that hangs a curtain over someone's head.

Here is what buying an undocumented product actually means in practice:

  1. You cannot check fit. No published dimensions means nobody — including Aqara's own website — has told you how much space the unit needs above the window or beside the track.
  2. You cannot check torque. 0.2 N·m is a modest figure, and whether it is enough depends on your curtain weight, your track and how many layers you are running. With no published torque for the C3 or SEA, that calculation cannot be done.
  3. You cannot check power. No published voltage, current or power figure means you cannot confirm what supply the unit needs, or whether it draws from a battery or mains.
  4. You cannot check environment. Whether these units are rated for a Malaysian porch or balcony is simply not answerable from the published material.

So: if you are considering the C3 or the SEA, confirm fit, torque and power with us before you order. That is not a brush-off — it is the only responsible instruction available when the manufacturer has published no data.

One further note for the SEA variant: Aqara has no Malaysia or SEA regional site — its regions are de/en/eu/jp/ru/us. SEA-market SKUs live only under /en/ and may carry different certification or approval status than EU or US units. Check SIRIM / MTCE approval per SKU, before you buy. We cover this in buying Aqara in Malaysia safely.

What you can actually verify: E1 Track against E1 Rod

These two are properly documented, and Aqara distinguishes them clearly. Both are Zigbee 3.0, both are 0.2 N·m, both run at 100 r/min and 12 cm/s, and both use a built-in, non-replaceable lithium pack rated 5 V / 7.5 W.

Which one you need is decided by your window, not by the features. The Track variant is 145.7 × 96 × 46 mm and is meant to sit in the track. The Rod variant is 140.5 × 96 × 44 mm and is meant to sit at the rod.

Note that Aqara lists both variants under the same model number, CM-M01. That is unusual and it is a real source of confusion. When you are quoted a motor, confirm explicitly which variant you are being given.

Two differences matter more than the rest:

The Rod variant publishes IP20 and 0~45 °C. The Track variant publishes neither an IP rating nor an operating temperature. That is not a subtle difference in coverage — it is one documented product and one not. If your window is in a porch, balcony or open corridor, you can reason about the Rod variant's limits and not at all about the Track variant's.

The Rod variant's spec page lists no box contents. So brackets, fixings and adaptors are not documented either.

0.2 N·m is the number to think hardest about

0.2 N·m is a modest torque. It is enough for a light to medium single layer on a straight, well-aligned track. It is where you start asking questions:

  • Blackout and dim-out fabric is heavier than sheer. Two layers in one track roughly doubles what the motor is pulling.
  • A bent, sagging or misaligned track multiplies the load. The motor works harder for the same curtain, and it is the alignment — not the motor — that usually decides whether 0.2 N·m is enough.
  • Curtain weight is where people go wrong. Nobody weighs their curtains before ordering a motor. We would rather you did, or let us do it, than find out in week two that the motor stalls halfway.

What actually decides this purchase in a Malaysian home

Four things, in the order you should check them.

1. Ceiling height and the space above the window. The E1 is 46 mm tall on the Track variant. The Track motor needs somewhere to sit inside the track system, and a high-ceilinged Malaysian terrace with a deep pelmet is actually easier than a low ceiling with a short drop. The question is not ceiling height in the abstract — it is whether there is a clear run above the track for the unit, the adaptors and your hand.

2. Curtain weight against 0.2 N·m. Covered above. Measure it, or have it measured.

3. What kind of window it is. A sliding or hanging track and a casement are different jobs. The Track variant assumes a track. If your window is a casement, a folding shutter, a vertical blind, or has a fixed arch above it, none of this comparison applies. Aqara's range is not one product that adapts to every opening.

4. The non-replaceable battery, and what it means in year four. This is the honest one, and it is the reason we would not skip a site survey.

The E1's lithium pack is built-in and not replaceable. There is no battery door. That is not a design mistake — it is what lets the unit be 46 mm tall and sealed — but it has a consequence: when that pack is eventually exhausted, it is a unit replacement, not a battery swap. Nobody has published how long that takes, and we will not estimate it for you.

So: a curtain motor with a sealed battery is a device with a finite service life. For a bedroom curtain you run twice a day, that trade is probably fine. For a living room curtain you open at 7am every morning for a decade, or for a rental unit where someone else inherits the window after you, it deserves a conversation before purchase rather than after failure.

One more thing: these are Zigbee devices

Both E1 variants are Zigbee 3.0 only. The Track variant explicitly has no Thread. They are not Matter devices and they do not become Matter devices.

That means they need an Aqara hub that speaks Zigbee — a normal requirement most readers will have solved. But if you are choosing a hub at the same time, note that the Thread questions in a general hub comparison do not apply to your curtains. Our Zigbee, Wi-Fi or Matter: choosing a hub post covers that decision properly.

One more published figure: 0–95 %RH, listed for the Track variant only. That is a humidity range for an indoor Malaysian room, which is not a difficult bar — but it is an indoor bar.

What this page does not claim

  • No specification of any kind for the Curtain Controller C3 or SEA. Because none is published.
  • No battery life figure for any motor here. Aqara publishes none, and we will not estimate one.
  • No torque, size, protocol or power figure for the C3 or SEA. Nothing to quote.
  • No statement that the Track variant is or is not suitable for an outdoor or semi-outdoor window. Aqara publishes no IP rating and no operating temperature for it, so we cannot say.
  • No price for any curtain motor. Confirm with us.
  • No warranty duration, no service commitment. Ask us.
