No Neutral Smart Switch Malaysia: Rewire, Relay Module, or Neither?
No neutral smart switch Malaysia: three honest routes when the box has no neutral - a no-neutral switch, a rewire, or a relay module at the ceiling rose.
Answer up front — Yes, most of a working home security setup runs without a recurring fee, because the sensing layer — door and window contacts, motion and presence sensors, local automation — does the actual work and has never been a subscription product. The camera is where the fee lives, and even there it is avoidable: the G100 records H.264 to a MicroSD card you buy yourself. What you get in exchange is not free security. It is a system you maintain.
Before defending the position, let it be stated. The objection is not silly:
"I have to pay somebody every month forever to see my own front door, or the device I paid for stops working."
That happened to enough people that it is reasonable to ask. And the honest answer is that the security products which charge are charging for off-site storage, remote access, and vendor-run infrastructure — not for the detection. Detection is a radio chip and a magnet.
So: what actually works with no recurring fee, what still costs you something, and what "no monthly fee" quietly transfers onto you.
| Layer | Recurring fee? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Door and window contact sensors | None | Battery, local radio, they report state changes |
| Motion and presence sensing | None | Local detection; the mmWave sensors do their work on your premises |
| Local automation | None | Runs on your hub; keeps running when the internet drops |
| Lock state and access logs | None | Held on the lock and the hub |
| Alarm / siren output | None | A local action |
| Cloud video recording | This is where the fee is | Optional, and avoidable — see below |
| Some FP2 features | Yes — "some features need an Aqara subscription" | On Aqara's own wording, so check before you rely on a specific feature |
The pattern: everything that senses and everything that acts is free. What costs is remote.
That is not a loophole. It is a genuinely different architecture — the alarm goes off in your house and your phone gets told, rather than a stranger's server watching your living room.
This is the part that makes the no-subscription position strong rather than merely cheap, and in Malaysia it matters more than it does in places with more reliable connectivity.
A rule that runs on your hub does not need the internet. Presence detected in the hallway at 2am → hallway light at low level → nobody home → aircon off, water heater off. All of that executes locally. The internet outage that used to leave your house doing nothing is now just an outage.
For what a wiring-free version of this looks like, see no-neutral rewiring and relay modules, and for how local control helps when the fibre drops, why your smart device keeps dropping off.
This is where the objection gets answered properly, so it is worth being precise.
The siren is a local action. When a contact opens at 3am, your hub sounds the alarm. That does not require a server, an account, or a phone call to anyone's cloud. The alarm happens in your house and then, separately, your phone is told. If the internet is down, the first half still happens — which is the half that matters.
What you lose is the call-out chain, not the alarm. With a subscription you may get professional monitoring, or a monitored response path, or somebody else's operations room watching. Without one, the notification lands on phones that people ignore at 3am. Build for that honestly:
The build that gets you most of the way is unglamorous: a contact on every exterior door and accessible window, presence or motion coverage in the space an intruder must cross, a siren you can reach, and a way to tell the difference between "someone is in the hallway at 3am" and "the front door is open and nobody is home". Layering it is covered in home security while you are away in Malaysia.
This is where the "no monthly fee" claim has to be precise, because both options have a caveat and neither caveat is hidden.
The G5 Pro — a camera that is also a hub. PoE variant (CH-C03E/D) has Ethernet 802.3af plus Zigbee and Thread 802.15.4 plus Bluetooth; the Wi-Fi variant runs 2.4–5 GHz with the same radios. 2688 × 1520 Quad HD, f/1.0, 4.2 mm, 70.5 × 70.5 × 89 mm, PIR H 100° / V 65°, a 3 W spotlight. Aqara's 30-day cloud trial runs, then you drop to a subscription-free tier. So: you are not forced into a fee, and the trial is a window rather than a hook. Note also that the stand is not included, and whether the G5 Pro is a full Matter Controller is not stated by Aqara — we will not guess at it.
The G100 — local recording, and you bring the card. Standalone indoor camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ax 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth only — not a hub, no Thread, no Matter. 2304 × 1296, 140° diagonal, H.264. Two things to be clear about before you buy:
And be careful with the G5 Pro's field-of-view figure: Aqara's own spec table mislabels 133° as "Image Sensor Size." It is the diagonal field of view. We quote it correctly rather than repeating their label.
Neither camera's price is something we will guess at here — confirm with us.
This is the part of the pitch that usually gets left out, so here it is.
You own the storage. The card is yours to buy, yours to format, and yours to replace. Class 10+ is the requirement; up to 512 GB.
You own the failure. When the card dies, writes to constant video, or is stolen, footage from that period is gone. There is no second copy at someone else's data centre. That is the actual trade: you traded a subscription for single-copy storage you are responsible for.
You own the retention maths. H.264 at 2304 × 1296 on a card you supplied means you should work out how much footage you actually need before you pick a capacity. A camera that quietly overwrites footage you needed is a worse outcome than one you did not buy.
You give up remote access. No pulling a live feed from a browser on holiday, no sharing a clip with a neighbour by link, no off-site backup if the unit is stolen. If off-site matters to you, a subscription is not a rip-off — it is buying a capability you cannot build on a memory card.
