Designing Smart Lighting Scenes for Malaysian Homes and Offices

A dim living room at dusk in a Malaysian home with warm light washing a tiled floor and ceiling cove lighting in a cooler tone, showing two different colour temperatures in the same space

Answer up front — Design the circuit before you select the device. Load compatibility, dimming behaviour and existing wiring determine what a lighting scene can do; the fixture only determines how it looks. Aqara's 2026 lighting range gives you 2,000K–9,000K tunable white across the Floor Lamp T1, LED Downlight T2, LED Strip T2 and Outdoor String Lights H1, with 18 independently controllable zones on the Floor Lamp T1 and on every 3 m of LED Strip T2. The scenes should be designed per activity, not per zone. Malaysian pricing for all five lights was not announced at IFA 2026 and is not confirmed here — confirm with us.

Most lighting jobs fail at the board, not at the keypad. An installer picks the beautiful fixture, builds the scene, switches it on at commissioning, and discovers the existing drivers will not dim it, or that the circuit is shared with a fan, or that the ceiling is 2.7 m and there is nowhere to recess anything. The scene is the last hour of the job. The circuit is the first day of the job.

The 2026 Aqara lighting range

All five were announced at IFA 2026 on 4 September 2026. Every product supports Thread and Zigbee, is Matter-enabled, and works with Apple Home, Home Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Homey.

Floor Lamp T1RGBIC colour plus up to 1000 lm white. 16-bit 5-channel chip, 18 individually controllable zones, tunable white 2,000K–9,000KLiving rooms, bedrooms, studies, home theatres
LED Downlight T2Ultra-thin profile. Two versions: RGB CCT (2,000K–9,000K, 16M colours) and simple CCT up to 1,200 lmLow ceilings and straightforward retrofits
LED Strip T2Flexible and trimmable, 108 LEDs/m, 16-bit 5-channel chip, 18 independently controllable zones every 3 m, smooth gradients and music-synchronised effectsUnder cabinets, behind furniture, coves
Outdoor String Lights H1Aqara's first move into outdoor lighting. Weatherproof, individually controllable zones, 2,000K–9,000KPatios, decks, courtyards, outdoor entertaining
Permanent Outdoor Lights H1 (100 ft)Installed once, eaves-mounted, one-tap presets, independently controlled LEDs, extendable and cuttable to fit the roofline, year-round weatherproofEaves, where the annual install-and-remove ritual ends

Pricing and availability were to be announced later in the year at IFA 2026, and none of these five has a confirmed Malaysian price. Confirm with us before you build a quotation around them. Forum trial prices offered in the US, Canada, the EU and the UK were explicitly described by Aqara as not representing final retail pricing at launch.

The two downlight versions are the practical decision most Malaysian retrofits turn on. The simple CCT version to 1,200 lm is a like-for-like replacement for a standard downlight. The RGB CCT version is a different product with a different reason to exist. Mixing them in one ceiling because they are both "downlights" produces a room where some fittings do colour and some do not, and the zones read badly.

Start with the circuit, not the fixture

Before any fixture is chosen:

  1. Establish what is on each circuit. Fans, aircon pumps, sockets and existing dimmers share circuits in most Malaysian homes in ways the switch plate does not reveal. LED load and dimming compatibility is the reference work.
  2. Check the existing drivers. A downlight with a legacy constant-voltage driver may not dim, may flicker at the bottom of the range, or may not accept a smart module at all.
  3. Confirm what can be neutral-wired. If there is no neutral at the fitting, the design changes. Which smart home retrofit is realistic in Malaysia covers the cases in order of preference.
  4. Measure the ceiling. The downlight T2's ultra-thin profile is the answer to a 2.7 m condominium ceiling with no recess depth. It is a reason to specify that downlight, not a reason to skip measuring. The same height problem applies to presence sensor coverage — see installing Aqara presence sensors.
  5. Decide zones at circuit level. A zone that shares a circuit cannot be dimmed independently, however capable the fixture is.

Colour temperature as a design tool

The 2,000K–9,000K range is wide enough that it stops being a specification and becomes the main lever in a lighting scene. Using the conventional bands most designers work to:

Colour temperatureConventional useScene it belongs to
Around 2,000KDeep warm, candle-adjacentLate evening, winding down, bedside
Around 3,000KWarm white, residential throughoutGeneral living in the evening
Around 4,000KNeutral, balancedTask areas during the day, kitchens
Above 6,000KDaylight-adjacent, coolWork spaces and daytime focus

The useful move is putting two bands in the same room at the same time. A living room where the main downlights sit around 3,000K and the cove or strip sits at 2,000K reads as layered rather than flat. A study that is 2,000K at 7 pm and 5,000K at 9 am is one fixture doing the job of two. This is where the independent zones matter — the 18 zones on the Floor Lamp T1 and on every 3 m of the LED Strip T2 exist so different parts of a room can hold different temperatures at the same time.

Design scenes per activity, not per zone

The common mistake is a one-to-one mapping of zones to scenes. Eighteen zones does not mean eighteen scenes. It means one scene can be shaped across the room.

SpaceMomentTemperature approachZones in use
Living roomEvening arrivalWarm across the room, cooler or neutral at task points3–4
Living roomWatchingDeep warm, low overall level, screen-adjacent kept dark2–3
KitchenCookingNeutral, higher overall level, under-cabinet task strip2–3
BedroomWinding downDeep warm, bedside separate from the main field1–2
CorridorMovement at nightOne narrow band, low level, no colour1
Home officeDaytime workCool, higher level, stable1–2
PatioEvening entertainingWarm, independent control from indoors1–2

Keep the corridor at a single narrow band. A corridor is not a mood space — it is a circulation space, and a scene that shifts temperature as someone walks through it reads as faulty rather than designed.

Should the bedroom be warmer than the kitchen? Yes. A kitchen is a task space used at full attention with the room at its brightest. A bedroom is used at low light levels, and warm light supports the wind-down state rather than working against it. Same house, same fixtures, different design intent per room — which is the whole argument for tunable white over a fixed-temperature install.

The commissioning questions

These are the questions that separate a lighting design from a set of devices that switch on.

  1. What is this room at 7 pm, and what is it at 9 am? If the answer is the same, the client needs fewer zones, not more.
  2. What colour temperature is the corridor? Decide it once, narrow band, and do not let it participate in the evening scenes.
  3. Is the bedroom warmer than the kitchen? It should be. Confirm the client agrees, in writing, at handover.
  4. Which zones are actually used? Author the scenes, then delete the zones nobody uses. A scene with eight zones where two carry all the weight is eight times the commissioning effort for no visible gain.
  5. What does each scene do when the network is down? Test it. A scene that depends on cloud reachability is not a scene, it is a subscription to someone else's uptime.
  6. Is the strip trimmable for this run? The LED Strip T2 is trimmable at 108 LEDs/m with zones every 3 m. Plan the zone boundaries against the cut points, not after.
  7. Who owns the outdoor scenes? Outdoor String Lights H1 and Permanent Outdoor Lights H1 automate by time of day, by environment or by other Aqara devices. Decide at design whether a neighbour's movement or a rain-triggered automation is acceptable to the client.
  8. What is the manual fallback? Every scene needs a physical answer when the app is not there. Our commissioning and handover testing guide covers building the pack.
